5 Common Fish Diseases And How To Spot And Treat Them

hey y’all welcome back Mandy with my
hectic life pets where we talk about all things pet and putt related and today I
wanted to go over with you my top five most common fish diseases and how you
can spot them so first off we have ik also known as white spots disease it is
a small protozoan that will attach itself to your fish
now when fish are first infected a lot of times you will see that they are like
rubbing up against ornaments rubbing against rubbing themselves down on the
gravel trying to basically dislodge the parasite they look very uncomfortable
fish that are infected with ick also tend to look like they’ve been sprinkled
with a bunch of salt like the named white spots disease suggests they are
covered in small little white specks now there are many different treatments
available that you can use as directed at all the different stores one of my
favorite remedies that I have found to be super effective so far has been the
new life spectrum egg shield now it only works if your fish will eat it the fish
that I have gotten in that were infected with it if they were willing to eat it
they were it free and healthy within a couple of weeks it is an alternative
option again though if your fish will eat it and it’s not super cheap and a
lot of times it’s harder to find so you might end up having to buy it online but
with the fish that have eaten it I’ve had 100% success rate with curing of egg
and not losing my fish so next up we have thin tail and mouth rot like the
name suggests your fish will appear like their tail is almost melting or fins are
starting to get frayed and their mouth almost looks like it’s rotting away
it looks like they’re just swimming around open mouth and it can make it
very difficult for fish to swim and eat now fin and mouth rot are usually caused
by either poor water conditions or if your fish got nipped then it’s going to
cause a bacterial infection which is what causes that rotten kind of look to
your fish now this is a bacterial infection that tends to come from poor
water quality or if your fish is getting picked on or maybe you even purchased it
that way this one is super easy to treat now there are antibiotics or you can
also use malefics to help with treating your aquarium I’ve noticed over the
years really just doing a lot more frequent water changes sometimes as
often as a water change every day along with adding a little bit of aquarium
salt seems to get rid of the disease just fine as long as it hasn’t gone too
far and third we have fungal infections now fungal infections tend to be pretty
obvious you’ll see what looks like white fluffy cotton appearing on your fish if
this is left untreated the fungus will continue to eat away at your fish and
this can also lead to secondary bacterial infections now products like
pima fix can help with the fungus and malefics can help if there is a
secondary bacterial infection now this disease similar to thin rot can be
brought on by poor water quality or the fish getting attacked by another fish or
even injuring itself on an ornament that is too sharp and should probably be
removed from the tank now number four is dropsy dropsy unfortunately quite
frequently is a fish killer dropsy is a bacterial infection of the
kidneys and quite frequently causes renal failure in your fish now dropsy is
often recognized as your fish is looking very bloated
and the scales begin to kind of spike up and have this sort of weird porcupinie
appearance to them now there are antibiotics that can be used to treat
this along with frequent water changes but unfortunately because a lot of times
it does end up in causing renal failure the success rate is not very high in
treating dropsy now number five is velvet similarly to egg velvet is a
small parasite that will attach itself to your fish fish will tend to become
lethargic and start rubbing themselves against things to try to dislodge the
parasites and they will start to get a rust like appearance all over their body
in severe cases you might also noticed clamped fins lethargy and labored
breathing in your fish one of the most common treatments for velvet is shutting
off the tank lights and covering the tank to put the tank in total darkness
along with raising the temperature of the water and using a copper based
medication velvet is extremely common amongst fish and typically pretty easy
to get rid of so what are some of the diseases that you’ve come across in your
aquarium and what methods did you use to treat it that we’re successful let us
know in the comments below because we love hearing all avails information and
experiences to help us all grow in our aquarium hobby well that’s all for

  1. I m new and also subscribed
I bought 4 fishes yesterday and these are my first ever fishes. So I m a little bit tensioned that they are swimming Below the water not in the middle of tank so is this fine ??

  2. Hi, I love your video and great information. I have a question about my betta fish possibly having fin/tail rot or a tear in his fins. I bought my Crowntail betta fish about a week ago from a pet store. When I got him it looked like he had a small hole in his upper/ bottom fin near the body. It looks like someone took a small pin or needle in his fin and poked a hole in. I think he has at least one or two more holes but it is hard to tell since he looks very young and swims really fast. I also have a rubber lip bottom feeder who also likes to try and pick on the betta from time to time. I also know that his dark blue coat was beautiful when I first got the betta but now it seems like half the coloring has disappeared from the body making what his blue coloring looks like a faded black indigo color. I used API aquarium salt and a Top Fin water conditioner and a top fin bacteria supplement and let the tank cycle through for a week before i got the betta and i added the API stress coat when I put the betta in the tank. So I think he might have fin tears or tail rot when i first got him and conditions may have worsened when he went into his tank. I hope this information is beneficial but i just wanted to be sure i am dealing with fin/tail rot and/or stress before i start medication for my betta who appears to be young still since he is quite small. If you have any ideas can you please contact me and see what it could possibly be? Thank you

  3. When you turn off the lights, do you also turn off the pump filter? As well as feed him regularly?? For how long do i keep him covered?

  4. I need some help😕 so I have a betta fish with a white body and blue and red fins. When I first got him (5 months ago) his entire body was white, but lately I noticed that above his gills (not on them) there was this small red area, but it looked like the red was under his scales brcause i saw the white scales above. It may be that he is sick, or is just changimg color. Does anyone else know what is happening? If he is sick, is there any way I can treat it effectively?

  5. I have a fish who has lost all it scales from the middle to it's tail. So it is now swimming on it's nose. Is it tail rot or something else? Water is fine. Checked it – twice.

  6. My fish is getting thicker and thicker with trying to breed lot n lot of oxygen what is the medicine used for my discuss fish .fish colour is become dull.she is moving but no fats in fish body remained what is the medicine given to him

  7. My goldfish had all 5 steps and maybe Aids lol I treated them with ich x and 30% water change everyday for a week but the Ich was still there. So i threw in a heater and got the water to 80 degree. No i didnt just set it to 80 degree. For each day i set the temperature a little higher until it reach 80 degree. After that they all died (

  8. My neon tetras have cottonmouth and that’s why I watched this video but it didn’t help. Oh well. Just using heat and salt for right now until my package of melafix comes in the mail. Then hope everything goes uphill from there

  9. i had a goldfish with a black spot on that means it is sick but my but my fish died 1 of 3 becuse i had 1 with a black spot on it so i got 2 more fish now i have 4 fish i got 2 goldfish 1 black moor 1 kellaco

  10. i think my black moor goldfish has velvet and i'm nervous because it's my first time owning a moor goldfish. i'm trying to cover his tank and see if that works. if it doesn't i'll have to change the water tomorrow, but this video helped me a ton. thank you.

  11. Hi i hope you can reply to this message. My fish i thought were getting a ich outbreak once noticing that which was Saturday i lost one fish. The symptoms looked like a wet cotton forming over top of the fins in light spots here and there. Then i found small patches that were fuzzy. Now the growth i see in googles images for fungal disease the patches are huge an not small like in my case? Do you think it is fungal disease? There are not multiple white dots like salt on the fish, just the little patches of fuzz sort of stuff.

  12. So I got a new aquarium a few weeks ago I had a guppy, 2 mollys(dalmation and black), a platy(red swordtail I think) and a very small cory catfish. The guppy died a couple days ago his stomach looked enlarged and he couldn't swim properly. I think he might've had swim bladder disease but I dont know maybe he had bubbles in his stomach. Now my black molly seems to have something wrong with him his stomach is enlarged too but he can still swim but its weird he kinda points his nose down it seems. Then the dalmation molly he just seems limp like his back tail just looks limp and he barely moves. Im new to this and I really want to know whats wrong. I bought a new red swordtail because the other one seemed lonely. He is looking better but thye dont swim much. The cory catfish swims none stop tho then he lays down for like 10 mins and goes back to sprinting the tank. (Part of me wonders maybe the black molly is not a boy and she is pregnant but I dont know) if anyone reads this and can help it would be very much appreciated. I bought a new filter, I have a 10 gallon tank, I have a airstone (turned it off though scared it was producing too many bubbles), Nitrite levels are high, hardness is high. Please help.

  13. One of my blue fish has a big black spot on it's head and keeps turning to the side which disease would you say that is?

  14. I got 3 goldfish with a huge amount of the white spots and their fins are all ripped. I thought it was the bigger one picking on the little ones but the next day his were all ripped to

  15. I have two bettas, both are sick with different symptoms.
    1. The first fish has symptoms of labored breathing, darting, slightly yellowing, lethargy, and ‘falling’ when he’s resting at the bottom of the tank, and resting vertically at the bottom.

    2. The second fish has a faded dark coloring, floats and turns to the side at the top of the water (almost looks like he’s dead), labored breathing, and hides behind his heater.

They both have no trouble with eating however. Can anyone suggest what might be wrong and how I can help them? I’ve been trying to treat them for forever now and everything is so confusing and I can’t get them to get better.

  16. The illustration you used for dropsy is actually a perfectly healthy variety of fancy goldfish called a crown pearlscale. It looks like it has dropsy but it does not.

  17. This is great, I’ve had 5 fish die recently including a betta and now my other two bettas are going down hill fast. I’ve been struggling eith this for a little over a month now. They are showing so many signs but aren’t reacting well to any treatments so far.

  18. My beta fishes scales and gills are blackish. Is this normal because this has been going on for a while. No growth but I'm just worried. Is this the rotting disease?

  19. I have a shunbunkin that I got from a fair. I'm just wondering that of his back is sticking over his head like a hump does this mean he is sick? (I know this sounds pretty dumb lol, but I just want to check )

  20. My betta fish has formed 2 white spots in his eyes (fairly small in both eyes) and he is forming pink patches all over his body, save the fins and tails. What does he have?

  21. I have a angel fish that died before i even noticed a change and it looked like it's scales under it's fins were melting away … what does that mean?

  22. How about the fish that bite or eats the smaller one? They killed some of my cutest fishes in the aquarium so what do I do?

  23. Hi I have a dwarf gourami he has what I can only explain to be a small pink tumour close to his eye (it's not the same as any of the diseases on this list) I can notice it getting slightly bigger everyday CAN ANYONE HELP

  24. I hope someone can help me, one of my goldfish has literal circles INSIDE his body. They aren’t sticking out or anything, but each day more are appearing on his body. They are just dark spots inside his body you can see when he’s in the light. Can someone plz identify it?

  25. My oranda goldfish has a red dot on his head, it just showed up. Please help me figure out what it is, I’m very concerned😔He has a 20 gallon tank . He also started to develop brownish , reddish veins on his tail.

  26. I had a perfectly healthy tank of cichlids, 7 in a 75 gal. Been that way for over a year now. I added a new fish last week and believe he introduced something that's killing my fish. I've lost one, and others have it now. It's almost like a whitish film over the fish and there eyes. Seems to be patchy on them and even small strands hanging from them. Any idea what could be? Trying despritly to stop it…thanks for your help!

  27. So, I have a tank with glofish danios. One of my pink fish has a bump on it's side out of nowhere. It's not white, it's just the same color as my fish and doesn't seem to be causing any pain. I know this isn't a substitute for a vet but I was just wondering if you knew anything about it?

  28. Well i have a African Cichlid and he has red spots disease quite often but he usually looks like he is gonna die. Just do a 50 percent water change and put melafix in and my fish is doing pretty good.

  29. My goldfish lost a scale, before that he had a red sore on his mouth that went away and looked like a small piece of flesh hanging for a few days after and I noticed he's been swimming tilted here and there, but not constantly
He's the only one in a 90gal tank, no pineconing. Any thoughts are appreciated

  30. Quick question. I have one fish that has a fungus infection and I’m going to be treating it so will it be ok if i treat my whole tank even though the rest of my fish are fine?

  31. Hi, those remedies are great. Not to rain on your parade though, some people have fish that are sensitive to copper like corydorus catfish, so anther remedy would be better. Also i have a planted tank so i cant turn the lights off if my fish has that problem in the future. But thanks all the same for making the vid.

  32. My betta developed just a few white spots over his head and no where else the day after getting him, is this still ich?

  35. i have a moly have like a necrosis on his upper head but i have similar look but in a different kind of fish a tetra i didnt notice it right away bec it is dark and the fish is fine like a month or 2 i dont see any problem but one day i saw it already dead, similar on the moly its very active playing no scratching just fish follows and nipping on her own kind but i remember it started as an ulcer i thought it is just healing up, i dont remember that the 1st fish have those dark scary look have ulcers it just appeard like that so do you know something like this illness?

  36. I saw a guppy at the pet store… She was severely covered in fungus…so I saved her and she is currently going through her treatments

  37. I don't know what's wrong with my betta. The end of some of his tail have a moldy thing forming on it, is this fin rot? Please help I don't know what's happened. Due to season change the fish tank water has been very cold, I have only just noticed I have fixed this but his tail is still bad

  38. Hii my name is sreehari . I have guppies in my home. I took this from my friends house. Today when i look in the aquarium in their mouth i saw a red coloured spot. It has covered the outer part of the mouth. Pls tell the solution of it

  39. My betta is geting darker than it was when i got it, is this normal? My tank is 6.5 gallons and i clean about 2 gallons every 2 weeks, its a koi betta

  40. My guppy named sherlock just got dropsy. He has no sign of bloating yet, but I did see some very unevident raised scales. I think I may have caught this at an early stage. Does anyone know if dropsy can actually be cured? It has been said that dropsy cannot be 100% cured mandatorily. It will always discourage the fish again at some point. Is this true? Also, does FURAN 2 help with treating dropsy? Im planning on getting some Epsom salt. Pls reply soon! Thank you!

  41. I got a cardinal tetra that has discoloration spot at the beginning of it’s end fin on both sides is that fungal disease or is it some other kind of discoloration issue or how the fish was born?

  42. Can I add Melafix to my whole tank? I kinda wanted to treat them all together as a prerequisite cause even though all my fish were bought from separate tanks, they all had fish in those with rot. I was hoping it was okay to treat as a treatment and preventative while they adjust.

  43. My betta has something like a white circle and it spreads and kills the fish. I have 4 fish that died because of that. Do you know a cure or is it just like cancer? Please reply, I’m scared for my fishes. (I have 3 left alive)

  44. My betta fish change his color. He looks pale 🙁 what can i do? He is acting normal but his color is worrying me. I added pimafix to his 20 gallon tank.
