  1. Sounds like if you were just eating plant based versions, it wasn't possible to get enough BMAA.  Meat consumption acted as "biomagnification" with fruit bats, and I guess with Atlantic seafood?

  2. If you can get samples from hair of people, maybe it can be used as an early screening measure to find people who are more likely to developed these diseases later on and intervene with a dietary changes to avoid further BMAA build up.

  3. Doctor, can you reply to let us know if we should not take spirulina and chlorella now???!! Because I just got some and need to send it back if we should avoid it.

  4. I can not thank you enough for such tremendously informative vidoes. Your work has literally changed my life in a profound way. Major Kudos Dr. Greger!

  5. I read it was due to "dirty vaccines" . And Angela Merkel, well, she gets "clean vaccines" – just google it!

  6. Such an ugly disease, as if there are any good ones. Although rare, I wonder what the cause in children would be? Most importantly though, is there a treatment?

  7. So a Neurotoxin found in just about all blue green algae?, so where does this leave us with our algae derived omega 3 capsules?, are they safe?

also we're still waiting for an answer on the circulating levels of DHA/EPA and the link to prostate cancer that you posted 4 months ago!

please Doc don't leave us hanging for another 4 months! do we still take our Algae omega 3 capsules?

  8. Amazing how the ALS foundation doesn't promote this radically important information. I mean the ice bucket challenge fundraiser was all over the news. And somebody finds the exact cause and all you hear is crickets and all you see is tumbleweeds. I mean…

    Underwhelming to say the least.

  9. I'm trying to learn how to arrest and reverse the dementia (self-diagnosed by me) in my parents. I have provided for them some supplement powders from an alternative doctor who has had success with even bed-ridden patients. But, this uncovers an idea – my mother grew up on seafood from the Florida Gulf coast – Pensacola area. Not everyone in that area has alzheimers, but I know some of the relatives have. There must be something in the bodies of some people that might off-set the bma (?) from the seafood. They ate a LOT of shrimp, crabs, etc, but also a lot of figs and other garden foods that were available for several months.I hope to see more on this. 🙂

  10. My uncle was the only known ALS sufferer in our family. He was a first-generation Italian-American from a region in Italy where the disease is pretty much unknown. He lived in NC and then VA, and maybe he ate a lot of fish/seafood. Don't know.

  11. So we should avoid chlorella and spirulina because of blue algae.. I only use them because I can't get enough iron on my vegan diet. 🙁 Has anyone an idea what I could use instead?

  12. Are there supplements like "superfood" powders with blue green algae in them? And if so is this the same thing?

  13. So if this theory is correct would this mean that if you stopped eating seafood it would stop the progression or even reverse the diseases mentioned?

  14. This is really interesting, because cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) are one of the oldest forms of life on Earth, and cycads predate the dinosaurs. It makes me wonder if modern mammals are really adapted to being able to consume such ancient forms of life, that didn't evolve along with them, without negative effects.

  15. So, Charlie Tuna is a psychopathic serial killer? I knew we never should have trusted a talking fish in hipster glasses.

  16. Is this video a repeat? I'm thinking I've seen it before – but I look on the publishing date and it is 5th March 2016

I'm thinking maybe a year ago? Does anyone else have a similar memory?

  17. 01:40 "had to eat a thousand kilograms a day to get a toxic dose, that's like a ton of seeds daily"

Sorry to be anal, but that's not "like" a ton of seeds, it's exactly a ton of seeds 😛

  18. my dc ask me to take a DHA..because am pregnant. i currently taking a vegan 360mg EPA and DHA algae basid one by "whole earth &sea" ..should i stop?

  19. I've seen a lot of criticism lately about this channel.
Mostly that the opinions expressed are oversimplified, or just outright incorrect.
I'm not even talking about this story really.
The agenda is clear on this channel, if it's animal protein, it's bad.
    No real evidence required.
Dr. Greger's granny was close to death because of heart disease, because of meat consumption, so he claims.
Within two weeks of becoming a vegan, granny was walking 10 miles a day, and she lived for 30 more years, so he claims.
What bullshit, Dr. Greger is an obvious liar, with a vegan agenda.
An agenda that might see people live a longer life.
    More research required.
Sorry Dr. Greger, but you're a fraud.

  20. Pcture of Lou Gehrig and Bane Ruth fishing:

  21. holy tits, batman!! 😀 yo! wheres the video on the website??! i need that transcript homie! 😉 this one's only on youtube and i need the cited sources! thanks @Nutritionfacts

  22. another HUGE reason why people should never eat those " healthy Fishy Animals"…or any Animals….Lou Gehrig's Disease and Alzheimer's are one of the scariest diseases ….no thank you!…. I am staying Vegan for sure!

  23. Thank you for sharing this finding. When I first learned of ALS many years ago there was very little understanding of possible causes of the disease.

  24. I really love this channel and the work of Dr. Greger, if you think of doing french captions I can translate! Let me know!

  25. One would imagine that the prevalence of ALS would be greater in countries where the toxin producing algae is present and seafood is consumed or imported from such areas. Perhaps even mapping geographic areas would produce visual clues, such as hotter spots at coastal regions where the toxin producing algae is present and seafood is a staple?

  26. You wouldn't eat anything that fell in your toilet bowl so why would you eat fish? Where do you think the world's sewage gets disposed??

  27. It's not just eating, it's breathing too. A few years back, I read an article that people who owned lake homes in New Hampshire…….on a specific lake that had blue-green algae blooms were getting diagnosed w/ ALS at an alarming rate. Scary!

  28. So, I assume that the Guam population has been instructed to avoid eating these fruit bats. Did ALS go away? That would make this link more convincing.

  29. i was diagnosed 2011. i was diagnosed with the bulbar form of ALS and was given one year to live. My symptoms progressed quickly. 30. So I take algae derived omega 3 capsules–how do I know that the algae used in the capsules is free of BMAA?

  31. I love your channel and you are my goto for nutritional info – with this my husband was diagnosed with ALS 2 years ago and I am trying to reverse or stop the progress of this cruel disease, however we have been full vegan for about 5 years and don't eat Seaford etc, so not sure where his ALS has surfaced from.
