Ambika Mess Kozhikode Lunch House | Ambika Mess Fish Meals
In Kozhikode, there are enough of lunch houses, or mess houses. This time we are in Ambika Mess. We have to eat all vegetables. But this gravy on top of king fish can be mixed with rice. It is good to eat so. Shabeer is from Kozhikode. This is Vineeth. He was with me for northeast trip. He loves sardines. We have to taste the food from here. Before that, we will go to the kitchen and see the preparations. We are in the kitchen of Ambika Mess. After seeing the preparations, we will move on to the tastes. Cooking is going on. What is this? This is fish curry. Cooking is on firewood stove, right? What is this? This is beef chili. We saw the cooking of fish curry. It was firewood stove there. Here, it is gas stove. Different varieties of fish are being fried on gas stove. They have king fish, mackerel, anchovy, pomfret, prawns etc. Different varieties of fish eggs. What is this? It is freshly fried. This is a special masala of Ambika Hotel. They prepare this here, in coconut oil I think. Yes, I am getting the sweet smell of coconut oil. Different hotels have different ways. Here, they apply masala on the fish and fry it. Then they apply masala once more, before serving it. This masala is their own preparation, made in coconut oil. Fish is well covered with this mix before it is served to us. There are many varieties of fish. Pomfret is being fried. Pomfret is fried. Now they will put masala on top. Masala which is their own preparation. Though all these are there, our favorite item is sardines. My friend Vineeth loves sardines the most. This anchovy is something that will go well with lemon juice or rice soup. But the most important item is his favorite, sardines. When we were on northeast tour, he couldn’t sleep without eating this. But we didn’t get it there. Today we have sardines. We can see its preparation also. Are you eating it today? Yes, of course. He will have sardines today. We will have sardines, and other items too. Do we Malayalees have a life without sardines? This was all about the kitchen in Ambika Mess. Now let us go and taste these food items. Sardines are fried. All the fish has been fried. Let’s go. We are a bit early. We reached before 12. We had to take the shots of cooking. Moreover, we have to eat before it becomes too crowded. So food is ready. By the time we finish eating, it will be time for people to come for lunch. Rice is kept here. Rice and curries are ready. This time Vineeth is behind the camera. Though he loves sardines, we are making him wait for some time. Shabeer, what do you want? King fish, pomfret, prawns, sardines, many are there. I will have anchovy. Not one anchovy, one plate of anchovy. He wants a plate of anchovy. I need king fish. Vineeth wants sardines, a little later. Sambar is there. And one more dish they call pachakkari. It has cucumber, tomato, and lentils. It is a curry with gravy. King fish with masala smeared over it. As I told you, they make this separately and apply over fish. This is a specialty of this place – prawns with coconut. You can also call it a chutney with prawns and coconut. This is a special dish, according to Shabeer not me. It is his place, his people. So my people too. Pulisseri is there. Fish curry also. There are other curries too. As I have already taken sambar and pachakkari, I am not taking pulisseri and fish curry now. Shabeer is not happy with these. He wants fish curry only. Let me with their special prawns with coconut. Let me mix this with rice. Then I will mix sambar also with this. This is good. It tastes delicious. When the taste of prawns mixes with the taste of coconut and spices, it is a good taste. It is spicy. There are very few Malayalis who don’t love spicy food. Let me try just this. When the taste of prawns and coconut mix together, everyone will love this taste. Or it will be people who don’t like prawns. That will be very few. Now we have king fish. King fish with masala applied over it. See, don’t you feel like eating? Taste of coconut oil is predominant in this. Masala applied on top has been made in coconut oil. So that taste is noticeable. This fish is called as king fish. It is the king of all fishes. So won’t this have a special taste? Taste this and tell how it is. It is very crispy. It is not too deep fried. So it retains that juiciness. Anchovy is best when tasted with rice soup. It is a good side dish with lemon juice also. We are having lunch, not lemon juice. Shabeer is having anchovy with rice. You can try from this. I will take a small piece. I should have ordered king fish. So my decision was the best. But sardines is better than all these. Sardines is the best. We have kept it for Vineeth. It is his favorite fish. But anchovy is not a small fish. That’s true. In Ambika Mess, we saw many types of fish being fried. You can tell us which is your favorite fish. From among these, I liked king fish the most. Which one did you like? I also liked king fish more. But I happened to order anchovy. That is alright. Anchovy has a different taste. When I tasted king fish, I felt that anchovy has no taste. Vineeth loves mathi. Mention your favorite fish in the comment section. We should eat these vegetables. But this gravy on top of king fish is good to be mixed with rice. It has a good taste of coconut oil. Let me try one anchovy from Shabeer’s plate. I took the piece that was most fried. Let me take one more. This has been fried with curry leaves. In both the fish fries I tasted, one thing that is prominent is the taste of coconut oil. Taste of coconut oil is the highlight. The masala on king fish has coconut oil. There is no additional masala on anchovy. It has been lightly fried with masala. It is only lightly fried, not deep. Vegetable curry is another specialty of theirs. Let me try this. In this, main ingredients are cucumber, tomato, and lentils. It is good. It is not like sambar. This is a different taste. This is neither like mixed vegeatble curry nor like sambar. It is different. It has the taste of vegetables. Taste of mustards too. It tastes like homemade food. We don’t make like this in Kottayam. Let us finish our lunch. You keep watching our videos. Give your suggestions below. Till the next video, be happy. Keep smiling. Vineeth has to eat now. Starting with sardines? After seeing this, I am feeling better. This time, we are tasting Kaykkande biriyani from Mattanchery. Mutton roast too.
