>>BACK IN 1975 WE WERE
RECORDING ALL OF THE SHARK BITES THAT OCCURRED
IN THAT AREA. THE COMMUNITY DID NOT
WANT IT TO BE HEARD. THERE WERE SOME POLICIES
IN PLACE INVOLVING BEACH SAFETY PERSONNEL AND SO
FORTH TO TRY TO KEEP IT LOW KEY. BUT IT’S NO SIN TO HAVE A
SHARK BITE IN YOUR AREA. SIMPLY BECAUSE THAT
FORMULA, SHARK PLUS HUMAN EQUALS BITE IS WHAT’S
DICTATING THE PACE. IT’S ACTUALLY A BACKWARD
SLAP ON THE BACK SAYING GOOD JOB BECAUSE IT PROVES
THAT YOU’RE GETTING ENOUGH PEOPLE IN THE WATER
TO HAVE AN ATTACK.>>WE ARE A SHARK BITE
CAPITAL OF THE WORLD AND WE HAVE ABOUT 250
SURFERS OUT ALL THE TIME. AND THEY ACTUALLY ARE
SURFING RIGHT IN THE CHANNELS WHERE THE SHARKS
COME IN AND FEED AND THEY ACCIDENTALLY FALL DOWN OFF
THEIR BOARDS OR JUMP OFF THEIR BOARDS INTO THE
SLEWS WHERE THE SHARKS ARE FEEDING AND SHARKS MISTAKE
THEM AND BITE THEM.>>THE BITES THAT OCCUR ON
VOLUSIA COUNTY BEACHES ARE GENERALLY EQUATABLE
WITH A DOG BITE. TO CALL THEM ATTACKS
PROBABLY IS A BIT OF A MISNOMER CONSIDERING
THE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE. AND THE TENS OF MILLIONS
OF HOURS THAT ARE SPENT IN VOLUSIA COUNTY
WATERS EACH YEAR. TO HAVE ONLY EIGHT BITES,
IT’S JUST ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. AND THERE’S NEVER BEEN A
DEATH IN VOLUSIA COUNTY WATERS.
