Hi guys! Welcome to fish terminology segment in fisholover. Over the time, you might found a lot of fish terminology that might be confusing or new to you. We might help you with that. So here we are, launching the first segment with 5 terminology you might find related to fish, beginning with the ‘A’ letter. So, let’s check ‘em out. Number 1, Adelphophagus. This term refers to a mode of feeding when embryo feed on other embryo within the mother’s uterus. This mode of feeding normally occurs in shark species such as sand shark, Mako shark, and Greynurse shark. Initially when the first embryo hatch, it will consume their own yolk, and when it’s finish, it will ingest the unfertilized ova produced by the mother and eventually, eat their potential siblings while still in the uterus. It is also called intrauterine cannibalism. Number 2, Aestivate Meaning to be dormant or inactive during warm period. Certain species undergoes this dormancy during summer season by burrowing into sediments when the wetland dried out. Species such as salamander fish, black stripe minnow and African lungfish are amongst the fish that could live in this condition. This adaptation is due to the lung in their air bladder that contain thin wall blood-vessel. So, oxygen dissolved in these blood vessel will transport to the lung and they will be able to gulp air without the presence of water. Number 3. Air bladder or swim bladder refers to the fish organ fill with gas to control their buoyancy and stay at their current water depth without wasting energy in swimming. This organ only can be found in bony fish. The cartilaginous fish such as shark doesn’t have this accessory since they have other mechanism to control their buoyancy. Number 4. Adipose It simply means body fat. Adipose tissue is connective tissue that composed of mostly adipocytes or fat cells that specialized to store energy as fat. In fish, there is adipose fin, which is located at the back of dorsal fin. This fin is not present in all fishes. Only selected species such as salmonids and catfish family posses this small fleshy fin. Comparable to other fins, it is much smaller in size. However, the explanation for the function are still remain uncertain. Number 5. Axillary process. Refers to the bony splint above the pelvic fin. It looks like a spiny bone which composed of elongated and pointed scales. Normally could be observed in salmonids fish, whereby it looks like a protrusion appeared when the pelvic fin is pulled out. Interestingly, scientist use this axillary process clipping to determine the genetic profiles of the fish as it is unique.. similarly observed to human fingerprints. The sampling of axillary process is quick and will not alter the fish appearance.
