Kaikki Lapin kalapaikat [ENG SUBS] How to find fish in the wilderness

This is an interesting place because there is no fish in that lake. Or at least I don’t get any. Then when I go there. There are a lot of fish there. How to find fish in the wilderness Hello and Merry Christmas. Now it’s Christmas and I hope you’ve had a good Christmas and Santa has been generous. This time the topic is all fishing spots in Lapland. A firm promise right from the start. The most common question I get is where do I get the best fish or tell me the best place to fish. Where to go fishing. What is the best fishing spot. They are all very good questions. This is where I got the idea for this video. So I thought about talking about how I’m going to approach this when I am planning a fishing trip to Lapland. So how do I look for fishing spots. Usually I go fishing to places I have never been to before. For me, it’s the most exciting thing to look for new places and see new landscapes. That’s why I travel to so many places in Finnish, Swedish and Norwegian Lapland. However, I do not intend to spoil the joy of discovery. So, I will not tell the names of the fish places but I will tell general observations I have noticed in my travels. Map reading and everything else that I’ve noticed. These things I’m talking about are applicable throughout Lapland. So no matter where you fish there. But let’s start with the big lakes and rivers. Big lakes and rivers are nice places because they always have fish. They also have the potential for bigger fish. Big fish usually need a lot of water around them. Deep places and lots of food. In large lakes and river waters this is usually possible. So for those fishermen who need to catch big fish, it’s best for them to concentrate on such places. So if I went to set new records myself I’d probably choose a place with a big river and some big neep backwaters or lakes nearby. I’d look for places like this. Those places are most likely to get that big fish. The problem with big lakes is that they are difficult places for fishermen. Usually you cannot throw far enough and moving along the beaches is quite slow. Finding good fishing spots is slow. Fishing for large lakes is easiest when using a boat. Unfortunately, this is a rare luxury for hikers. So that’s why I usually skip the bigger lakes. It is usually not worth wasting time on them. Of course, if you pass by, then it’s worth throwing a few casts every now and then. The disadvantage of large rivers is that they have many fishermen. There is a lot of fishing pressure there, which makes it harder for them to catch fish. I have never visited a fishing place where human presence would have improved fishing and fish size. That’s why I’ll skip the bigger rivers myself. I prefer to focus on fishing where no one else goes. I find it more interesting to fish in places where there are no human traces on the beach. I also noticed that when I walk in long–distance and fish in different places. I’ve always gotten more fish in the lakes than flowing water. All the best places have been in the lakes. Almost every time. So, I would argue that these best places can be found somewhere other than these big known places. So. Big lakes and rivers always have fish. And if you don’t know where to fish, then it’s a good idea start with big lakes and rivers. They have the potential for big fish. But then we move on. Let’s move on to these lesser-known fish places small lakes and small rivers. These are, in my opinion, the best and most interesting fishing spots there. They may not produce the biggest fish, but if you know a little about what you do, you get a lot of fish. Up to dozens a day. But where do you find such ponds and rivers. When I read the map myself, I’m looking for a destination that is sure to have fish. So either a big lake or a river. They always have fish. From here I watch what kind of streams fall into the lake or river. Then I follow those streams and see what kind of ponds there are along the way. Many times the streams of Lapland are not interesting fishing destinations. In summer, they often have too little water for big fish. Many of the streams are good for creek fishing. Fishing is great fun but if you want to get bigger fish then the best places are somewhere else. But these streams are interesting because even though they don’t have big fish, they usually lead to these good fishing placess. For those ponds that are at the ends of the streams. Many times these ponds are some of the best fishing destinations. In the end, it’s quite simple to find these good fishing spots. Just look for a big lake and follow the streams and ponds that descend to it. But the difficulty is that not all ponds are the same. If the pond is small then it is possible that there is no fish in it. So that’s what makes a good pond? That’s something to think about. So. What kind of ponds are good? The most important thing is. That it is deep enough. It should not freeze in winter. If it freezes in winter then the fish cannot live in it. That’s the most important thing in a small pond. When looking at a map, the depth of a small pond can be estimated by looking at the contour lines around the pond. If the beach has a lot of contour lines close to each other then it is likely that they are also under water. Then that pond is deep and then it is also a great fishing spot. Another important thing is that a stream falls into that pond. Better yet, it would leave the stream too. The flowing water is important because it brings food to the pond and then the fish can spawn there. Then the flowing water also helps to keep the pond from freezing even in winter. These are the kind of things you should be able to see on a map or satellite image. So now I have made the claim that a good fishing spot is found by looking at a big lake on the map and following those streams and looking at the kind of ponds are there. Now I thought about taking a map and then let’s see how well this works. So I bring up this map and see what you can see on the map. Let’s take an example of the Vätsäri wilderness. Surnujärvi. Let’s start with that. Very big lake and challenging to fish on the beach because it is so big. First let’s look at the north end here. There is a river connection to Lake Lujapuolijärvi. Lujapuolijärvi is still quite a big place. It is over a kilometer wide. Let’s look a little closer. From the Lujapuolijärvi a stream flows into the pond and from there it continues into the pond of Taimenjärvi (Trout lake) There are certainly trout there so this is a good example of this theory. So a big lake with fish and a creek that leads to a good fishing spot. Trout lakes. From there the creek goes on to the other pond. But what else can you deduce from this map? If you look at these contour lines a bit, there is a rock and quite a lot of contour lines. Likewise, there are a lot of contour lines here. Also here. From this one can infer or guess that this side of the lake is deeper than this side. And here is probably the lowest point in the lake. This is probably quite a deep lake. Then lets look at the satellite image. What this tells us. It’s a little shallow here. It looks deep here and a lake bottom is visible here. So a propably pretty deep lake There are fewer contour lines and if you look at the satellite image you will see the bottom of the lake. So this time, It was quite right One can deduce something from the altitude curves Another thing that is interesting here is the altitude of the lakes. One lake is at 177 meters and the other at 219 meters. There is quite a lot of drop or rise in the short distance. Depends on which direction you look. I’ve noticed that these types of places are usually Char or trout lakes. When there is a steep slope and there is a lot of running water. So in places like this you can’t usually find the greyling. Of course there are exceptions, but usually if you want to get trout or char you can find them in this type of place In this case, this creek is quite important because trout usually require running water to be able to spawn. If this were to be taken away, it could be that the trout would no longer enjoy it and this would be a lake of char. But now that this is a small ecosystem, the trout can live in it. In my previous video, there is a picture of me walking down this slope with a rod in my hand. If you want to see what this place looks like. But there’s something about this place. We set off from a really big lake and came to another big lake that definitely has some fish and ended up with smaller ponds and there are definitely some fish there too. It is actually written on that map. But let’s see what else can be found if we start from the same place. So here is Lake Surnujärvi. It has a river connection to Joulujärvet. From here you can go quite a long way along the river There goes a creek and basically it goes all the way to Harrijärvi. Apparently here from Lujapuolijärvi there is also a water connection to Harrijärvi. There will certainly be a grayling here. I actually got them also. So, in this case too, this theory works. Following the creek you can get to a good fishing ground. I’ve never been to Christmas Lakes. I would love to visit. That trip is still waiting to come. Let’s look at a little bit of terrain here at Christmas Lake, so when you compare it to trout ponds this one is much lower. Not much contour linese are visible around the lakes. The terrain is also more fragile. It suggests that this might be a shallower lake than Taimen lammet. There are a lot of islands and rocks so this suggests that this could be a shallower lake. You can see it in the satellite image. So there are quite a few shallows here. Here you have to cast a little further when you go fishing. If I went fishing here myself. Probably I would try first here from the deep shore. and then all these places that descend into the lake. So let’s see what is the difference in height between these lakes This one is located at 167 meters and this at 164. So three meters falls here. That is to say, it does not have any water that runs crazy. If I have to guess, there are grayling and pike here. Because they are here, then surely they will also be here. Such a shallow spot may favor more grayling. So this is a guess. I’ve never been fishing here. If you look at this Harrijärvi then this is the same thing. Here is a little lower and let’s see what it looks like. This looks pretty good. This is the less shallow side. If you look at it then there’s no contour lines attached to it. The deep places are then found here. And here. There are also contour lines here. It looks like a deeper beach. If I were fishing here I would concentrate on these deeper beaches Especially if I was fishing with a fly. But there it is. Of course, that’s all guesswork. There is a small margin of error in these. There are places where all the specs are in order and still there are no fish There are also places that seem not to be worth fishing and still there are fish. So you only really see it on the spot. But it is better to make good guesses than to fish completely blind. But that’s a small look at Vätsäri. This can be duplicated anywhere in Lapland, be it in Finland, Sweden or Norway. Such a story. It’s time to continue the Christmas party. So, a little recap. There are fish in all the big rivers and lakes. But I think the best places are the little ponds next to the big lakes and rivers. When you follow different streams and rivers. There you will find ponds that are just unimaginable places to fish. The size of the stream may not matter. As long as it is, it is important. But then, when you look at that pond from here at home or from the ground, it would be important that it was deep enough. If it is not deep enough then fish cannot survive in winter. So how deep the lake is important. If a stream falls into the lake it will greatly improve your chances. That it’s a good fishing spot. And then looking at the contour lines around the pond, you can a little guess what the beach might be like. The beach is quite important for fly fishermen in particular. If it’s deep right off the beach you don’t have to throw such long throws. It’s a good feature. The sign of the swamp on the map is important. When you look at satellite imagery, the bottom of so many cut-away areas is dark. The satellite image shows that the bottom of the pond is dark. So it’s deep. However, this may not be the case. So that’s a small margin of error that can be here. If the pond has a marshy bottom, it may look dark and deep, but in reality it may not be. Many times these little ponds have the thing that most of the fish are in the same place. They have a small hotspot that is a much better place than the others. Many times when I hit a certain lake myself and fish it, I first say that there are no fish here. But then when I turn to the other end of the lake the fish are there in a small spot. It is characteristic of these places. My guess is that there’s a deeper place where fish like to be safe. Sometimes they go out to eat near the beach. So you shouldn’t get depressed right away if you don’t catch any fish in the first casts, it’s a good idea to look around what kind of places are there. But here’s a little little fishing spot info. So this is true everywhere in Lapland. This thing can be duplicated anywhere. With these methods, some fish can be found. Then it is everyone’s own thing what they want from fishing. Do you want to do this type of fishing. Want to walk that much or not. Let’s just keep on celebrating Christmas and waiting for Santa. Thanks for watching. If want to add something to this story, or if I missed something, you can write it down there. I believe people will read them and appreciate good tips. But let’s go back to Christmas Subscribe the channel if you feel like it. Let’s go back to the topic sometime and if something comes to mind that you want to hear more then post it there. Let’s see if I can do something sensible on the subject. Nothing else this time. Hello.
