SA doctor reflects on FDA approval of fish oil treatment for babies


new at five a San Antonio physician and study done at UT Health San Antonio playing a big role in the FDA approval of fish oil to help save critically ill babies in July the Food and Drug Administration approved Omega ven it’s a life-saving fish oil treatment for babies with gastrointestinal complications the study followed the outcomes of babies treated with fish oil in the NICU at University Hospital that study led by dr. Cynthia Blanco she says since 2011 she’s had more than 50 patients enrolled in the study and their survival without a liver transplant increased dramatically to better than 90% we are trying to learn the length of the therapy and also the dosage of the therapy and what does that do to other systems and long-term which babies do best with what kind of combination of different lipids through the IV so we’re going to continue to do research and to try to figure it out again the FDA approved that drug to be manufactured and sold in the United States
