Whitemouth Moray Eel – 3:12.5 – Nature Meets Paper

hi I’m Brandon and welcome to nature
meets paper the place where we go on an adventure to discover the world of
marine biology I’m a marine biologist and an artist I love sharing my love for

Tuesday and Saturday today we’ll be discovering how
I painted the white mouth Moray Eel brushes ready let’s dive in when
painting I find the average or the mid tones of the reference photo in specific
areas I’ll work from the background to the main subject
I am also left-handed so I work from the top right to the bottom left I’m not
supposed to run my hand along the canvas but it is something that I’m still
working on I just don’t want to run my hand through paint and ruin my canvas or
my paintings since this is coral and corals not supposed to be smooth I leave
blotchy patches to create character the background is also supposed to be
unfocused I don’t want too much detail here just hints of texture and depth are
used similar colors so that I don’t need to mix my colors and wash my brushes
often I typically work from my mid-tones to my darks then to my highlights I
mixed my blacks with colors typically sometimes it’s hard to tell that I have
mixed colors in but it gives a deeper feel compared to flat black I go around
the coral with darker colors and blend with the fresh black to make the
unfocused look this pushes some of the shadows deeper and gives the coral shape
when doing highlights I rarely use flat light
I only use white from my brightest highlights the colors in my highlights
are typically mixed with my mid-tone colors it might not be a very big amount
but it is still there it is time for me to work on the body and the main subject
of this painting I had a hard time figuring out how it was going to tackle
this painting there are so many tiny details that needed to be translated
into paint I landed on doing a base coat of Browns to get the shape of the
eel then going in with the details and then glazing on top
I start with my Browns and I’m not worried about my brush strokes here but
I’m starting with my Browns and I’m working with my highlights and darks
just to get the structure of the eel I want to get the shape in the feel of the
eel before I get in anything else the more this Moray is covered in tiny white
dots I didn’t want to put random dots and just everywhere and everywhere
because I would lose some details I also didn’t want to leave the spots white
since hardly any of them were bright white in this photo I had to map out by
small sections and get the spacing the size and the direction of the spot
sections I also had to make some of the dots out of focus which was a little
difficult this part took quite some time while the paint was drying on the spots
I worked on my first layers in the mouth I work in many layers and rarely just
have one layer of paint on the canvas I work from the back of the mouth which is
dark to the front which is light notice here that even though the eel is called
the white mouth Moray there is no plain white you have shadows that turn into
colors in this case a purple blue I don’t want to have too much detail yet I
know there are teeth and shadows but I will get to that later right now I just
want to get my base coat even and smooth once everything is dry to the touch
I can move on to glazing the spots I use yellows and browns to soften the spots I
want my subject to feel like it is part of the scene luckily for me I use my own
reference photos which causes my subject to be part of the same background if I
were to change the background like some artists do or even I’ve done in the past
you need to add a few background colors into the shadows and highlights to
incorporate the subject into the painting I don’t want to have it look
out of place that is where the purple shadows come in there are red corals
around the eel and water shifts light to the blue spectrum this causes some light
purples to show up when working on small details I use a long bristled thin brush
this is one of my favorite brushes it gets tiny details and get I can load a
ton of paint onto it I work the teeth and the shadows in the mouth
then I work the eyes I like leaving my eyes until last because everything comes
together all at once before I put the blacks and the pupils I make sure that I
had last details to the background I wasn’t really happy with how it turned
out at first so I had to go back and fix some details I thought it was too flat
and I didn’t have enough depth so I added out-of-focus highlights this
caused me to go back over the whole thing
and change some of the colors pushing the subject forward and back currently
I’m not looking for at my reference photo as much I’m only worried about my
painting how is my painting is turning out I take
plenty of time and stand several feet away from my painting and just look at
it since I’m the artist I’m the biggest critic but since I’m putting my
signature on it I want it to have a nice quality I
also have practice seeing where my painting needs more or less details so
then I can add a little bit of touches here and there to make my painting
better I like how this piece turned out in the end
I was worried it would be too much detail for me to handle if you look at
my reference photo you’d so there’s a lot of detail there and it’s a little
bit intimidating but I just took it a small layer at a time in small sections
and then I I could have painted this larger taking more time but I like how
this turned out I found that doing a painting this size is perfect for
completing a new painting every single week I’ll call this painting finished thank you for watching this video just
